Sublocade® removes the need to take medication every day. After stabilizing on a sublingual buprenorphine product, patients transition to a monthly injection that provides consistent relief from cravings and withdrawal. It is one less thing to manage — so you can focus on the rest of your recovery.

Understanding Sublocade®

A monthly, extended-release form of buprenorphine injected under the skin by a healthcare professional. It treats moderate to severe opioid use disorder.

No. Sublocade® is designed to be given once a month, with doses typically spaced at least 26 days apart. Your clinician will schedule each appointment.

Most patients first stabilize on a sublingual (under-the-tongue) buprenorphine product, then transition to Sublocade® based on an individualized plan.

Often, yes. Sublocade® forms a small depot under the skin that slowly releases medication. The lump typically shrinks over time. Do not rub or massage the area.

Constipation and injection-site reactions such as pain, itching, redness, or swelling are commonly reported. Contact the clinic if reactions become severe or do not improve.

It is strongly discouraged. Alcohol increases sedation and breathing risk and can be dangerous when combined with buprenorphine.

Tell your provider about all medications and substances you use. Combining buprenorphine with other central nervous system depressants can be risky and requires medical supervision.

Some people feel drowsy or less alert, especially early in treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

Contact the clinic as soon as possible. Your next dose will be arranged promptly and your schedule adjusted safely.

Yes. Having naloxone available is a smart safety step. In Ontario, free naloxone kits are available through provincial programs and many pharmacies.

Sublocade® is generally not prescribed during pregnancy. Patients who are pregnant or become pregnant during treatment are usually transitioned to a sublingual buprenorphine option. Speak with your care team if this applies to you.
